According to Clayton Morris of Fox News, Apple has been talking to AT&T and Verizon regarding the upcoming iSlate, but states that neither carrier has finalized a deal. Multiple carriers for the tablet had been discussed before (Apple iSlate Reviews – January 7th, 2010) but according to Morris additional details were revealed by his sources suggesting that Verizon will use some form of tiered pricing instead of a flat monthly rate.

“According to sources inside Verizon, the company’s version of the tablet will feature built-in Wi-Fi utilizing Verizon’s hotspots for free data; the device will switch onto the 3G cellular network when it’s away from a hotspot. This makes it easy and safe to connect to trusted Wi-Fi servers, and you’ll get a line-item for that data service on your cell bill. Basically you won’t need a home data modem service anymore.”

A brief report by Engadget today suggested that the new iSlate will look alot like a “big iPhone” but will be much more. Additionally, sources indicate multi-carrier support for the iSlate:

“Rumor…indicates that the device itself will have the internal hardware to work with multiple wireless providers, with Verizon apparently getting priority but there being no single-carrier tie here.”

The Business Insider added that sources who have seen the OS say it has “A Good Bit Of New Sexy To It,” which has raised expectations for a unique UI in the new tablet.

Taiwan Economic News reports that sources expect the new Apple tablet to have a 9.6-inch size screen, a P. A. Semi processor (ARM), long battery life, a price range of $799-$999, and HSDPA.

According to WiseGeek.com, “HSDPA, short for High-Speed Downlink Packet Access, is a new protocol for mobile telephone data transmission. It is known as a 3.5G (G stands for generation) technology. Essentially, the standard will provide download speeds on a mobile phone equivalent to an ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line) line in a homeshort for High-Speed Downlink Packet Access, is a new protocol for mobile telephone data transmission…. The built-in HSDPA would rule out Verizon as the rumored carrier (Apple iSlate Reviews – July 24th, 2009) as they not support the protocol.

Sources stated that deliveries to Apple from manufacturers are expected by December for a February, 2010 release. Battery packs will be provided by DynaPack and Wintek will continue manufacturing displays for Apple tablets as it has been doing for the iPhones.

The AppleInsider claims that after four years of development and setbacks, Steve Jobs is finally happy with their long anticipated tablet device. It appears that a go-ahead has been given to take the tablet to market sometime in early 2010.

The Apple tablet design is expected to lie somewhere between an iPhone and a laptop, with a 10-inch sized screen. Some rumored switch-ups include using an ARM processor instead of Intel’s Atom processor, and Verizon as a data provider instead of AT&T.

Using the ARM processor would make perfect sense after Apple’s acquisition last year of P.A. Semi, since it would provide them with greater control over the hardware while lowering costs.
